Entamoeba
The species Entamoeba histolytica, Entamoeba dispar, and Entamoeba moshkovskii colonise the human gastrointestinal tract and are virtually indistinguishable morphologically, although they exhibit relevant biochemical and genetic differences. Among them, E. histolytica is associated with amoebiasis and is capable of invading the intestinal mucosa, whereas E. dispar is generally considered a non-invasive species and accounts for a substantial proportion of asymptomatic Entamoeba colonisations.
The presence of Entamoeba in the intestine may be asymptomatic or associated with gastrointestinal manifestations of varying severity, including diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and dysentery. In invasive forms associated with E. histolytica, the parasite may penetrate the intestinal mucosa and spread to other organs, primarily the liver. Transmission occurs mainly through the ingestion of cysts present in contaminated water or food, making its investigation particularly relevant in epidemiological, parasitological, and public health studies.
