Cryptosporidium

Cryptosporidium parvum is an intestinal protozoan that causes cryptosporidiosis, an infection that may lead to watery diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, and weight loss. The severity and duration of symptoms depend largely on the host’s immune status, making the infection particularly relevant in children and immunocompromised patients.

Transmission occurs mainly via the faecal–oral route through the ingestion of oocysts present in contaminated water or food. Its detection in faecal samples is of interest in parasitological, epidemiological, and public health studies.
