Adenovirus
Human adenoviruses (HAdV) are non-enveloped and double-stranded viruses of Adenoviridae family, that can cause different human diseases, including conjunctivitis, respiratory infections and gastroenteritis. In fact, Adenoviruses, along with Rotavirus and Astrovirus, are the most frequent cause of severe gastroenteritis in enfants and young children.
Symptoms usually begins 24-48 hours following infection, and remains longer than Rotavirus or Astrovirus, about 5-8 days. In many cases, infections are self-limiting but can get severe in infants and immunosuppressed patients.
Certest CLIA detects specific proteins from the capsid (the shell of the virus) present in stool samples of patients.
