Norovirus GII

Norovirus GII is a highly contagious enteric virus and one of the main agents associated with acute gastroenteritis. Infection may cause diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, and abdominal pain, although it may also be asymptomatic. Dehydration is one of the main complications, particularly in children, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals.

Transmission occurs mainly via the faecal–oral route, through the consumption of contaminated food or water, or through contact with infected people, contaminated surfaces, or virus-containing particles. Its low infectious dose and high transmissibility facilitate outbreaks in hospitals, schools, care homes, and other enclosed settings.
