Rotavirus
Rotavirus is one of the leading causes of acute gastroenteritis, particularly in infants and young children. It is a non-enveloped virus with a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) genome, belonging to the Reoviridae family. Rotavirus A is the species responsible for most human infections.
Infection is primarily transmitted via the faecal-oral route and may cause watery diarrhoea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain. Symptoms usually appear 24–72 hours after infection and, although the disease is self-limiting in most cases, it may lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, especially in young children, older adults and immunocompromised patients.
Together with other enteric viruses such as Adenovirus and Astrovirus, Rotavirus is one of the leading viral agents associated with gastroenteritis. Its detection in stool samples supports the diagnosis of gastrointestinal infection and contributes to appropriate clinical management.
CerTest Rotavirus Ag detects Rotavirus antigens in human stool samples, providing a reliable aid in the diagnosis of Rotavirus infection.
